I picked up a Keytronic EP3435XTAT Switchable keyboard the other day, and it's awesome. It's easily the best non-mechanical keyboard I've used. It's a rubber dome design, but the keystrokes feel very crisp and nicely weighted. It's making the keyboards for my other computers feel like junk. It's also very solidly built (heavy).
It cleaned up surprisingly nicely, especially since it's from 1991. It does require an adapter to go from the 5-pin DIN connector to PS/2, but it's working great on Windows 7 on my Gateway GT5428. Not bad for only $5.

Is this one of those keyboards that makes the clackety-clack noise that some users love? I've thought about one of those meself, but Mac ....

We used to have one of these compact Dell units and I remember it not being terrible.

I used to come home late at night and start typing on the computer while my wife was asleep on the sofa. She would wake up and bitch at me for making so much noise. I have since gotten a Mac chicklet keyboard. I like it very much, but it's all what you're used to, I suppose.

I literally only have USB 3.0 ports... so add in another adaptor

Unfortunately, it's not. There is actually a Mac compatible clicky keyboard around now.

I've used those Dell keyboards before, and they are pretty decent. However, this Keytronic is on a completely different level.

Keyboards are probably the only computer component where older is actually better.

I just take whatever the sig other brings home - her work supplies her with whatever Apple products she needs. I just slurp up the remainders.

You're making me remember that my second newest computer isn't that new anymore. 2007 was a while ago as far as computers go.

I know what you mean. The majority of the computer stuff I get is free. It's better that way.

The free stuff is good, but you have to toss out the stuff that hobbles you ... and there it is.

I just bought a new laptop a few months ago, and I'm already wishing I'd held out just a few more months for a Broadwell processor and a GTX 980...

The junk definitely goes (tossed or scrapped). Collecting old computer hardware has become a fairly large hobby with a good friend of mine, originating from when we started to fix up computers for donation to a local charity. It also comes in handy when needing to help others recover their old files off of ancient devices.

However, Skylake looks to be on track for an end of 2015 release.

grumble grumble grumble.
An i7-4810, GTX 870M, 16GB memory, 2 mSATA SSDs and 2 hard drives should be enough future-proofing until 2017 or 2018 I'd hope...
